Course Description:
When in place, an effective and comprehensive campus security strategy can prevent an attack, like the ones we have seen in recent history, from occurring in your institution. The security system should also include a mechanism that responds to such an incident within seconds if it does occur.
However, this kind of security is not yet very common in US campuses and the fact is that, today, an armed intruder can easily gain access to the building and even to the classroom door of the average school.
That is why we created our Classroom Defense Strategies for Teachers (CDST) course. Our goal is to empower the teachers of our local communities with life-saving skills and education to better cope with these unfortunate incidents at the classroom level.
This course provides an alternative to the ‘sit-and-wait’ approach practiced by many schools in their lock-down procedures. We teach the teachers how to understand the tactical aspects of their specific classrooms. Where to hide their students and where to position themselves to gain a tactical advantage over the intruder, should he/she enter the classroom. We also show them how to use improvised tools, found in their classrooms, as ‘force-multipliers’ that can help them neutralize an intruder. This course empowers the teachers with a survival mindset and provides them with tools and knowledge to stay safe in those critical situations. It gives them a better understanding of their options – how to escape if possible, where to hide if needed and how to fight – as last resort.
